Blur detection and noise estimates are context dependent

A portrait background may be intentionally blurred, a watercolor may contain few hard edges and a night photograph may deliberately retain grain. The checker therefore reports explainable measurements and visual evidence rather than claiming that an aesthetic choice is objectively wrong. For critical work, inspect the subject at 100% zoom and compare against the original capture.

Ecommerce profiles favor a sufficiently large shortest edge, clean detail and controlled highlights. Print readiness uses your requested physical dimensions to calculate effective PPI. Social media prioritizes sensible resolution and avoids extreme compression. Document mode places more weight on contrast, exposure and edge clarity because readable text depends on them. These are preflight recommendations, not guarantees from a printer, marketplace or government agency.

How can I check image quality online?+

Can this tool tell if an image is blurry?+

It estimates edge sharpness and local detail using pixel gradients. A low sharpness result can reveal soft focus, motion blur or an undersized image, but textured and intentionally soft images may score differently.

Does the image quality checker upload my photos?+

No. Image decoding, pixel sampling, scoring, preview maps and report creation run on your device. Your selected images are not sent to the Rantey server.

Can I check several images at once?+

Yes. You can analyze up to 12 images in one batch. Files are processed sequentially and sampled at a limited resolution to reduce memory and CPU use on phones.

What does the print PPI check mean?+

PPI compares the image pixel dimensions with your intended physical print size. About 300 PPI is a common target for close-viewed photo prints, while larger posters may be acceptable at a lower PPI because they are viewed from farther away.

Can it detect JPEG compression artifacts?+

The tool estimates repeated differences along eight-pixel block boundaries, a common clue of heavy JPEG compression. It is a heuristic and should be reviewed with the visual block map.

Why do scores change when I select another use profile?+

A marketplace product photo, printed photograph, social post and scanned document have different useful thresholds. Rantey keeps the measured pixels the same but changes the readiness weighting and recommendations for the selected purpose.

Is the quality score a professional laboratory measurement?+

No. It is an explainable browser preflight based on sampled pixels, not a calibrated camera, print or forensic laboratory test. Review the metrics and visual maps instead of relying on the overall score alone.
