These are practical starting points, not universal rules. Logos, screenshots and detailed illustrations may need higher quality than ordinary photos.
Smart Target mode
Compress an image to 100KB, 200KB or a custom size
Some portals, forms and content systems enforce a maximum image size. Smart Target tests multiple quality levels locally and keeps the highest result that fits your chosen limit. If quality adjustment alone is not enough, it gradually reduces pixel dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio. Because image complexity differs, an exact byte count cannot be guaranteed, but the result is designed to stay at or below the selected target whenever the browser can produce it safely.
Compression happens in your browser
Rantey reads and re-encodes images using browser capabilities. Files are processed sequentially and are not sent to our server. Re-encoding also creates a fresh output file without carrying most source metadata, but you should still review any sensitive image before sharing it.

Which output format creates the smallest image?+
WebP often provides a useful balance of quality and file size for modern browsers. JPEG remains practical for photos, while PNG is best when lossless detail or compatibility is required.
Does image compression change the dimensions?+
Only if you select a maximum width. Images wider than that value are scaled down proportionally; smaller images keep their original dimensions.
