Crop in three steps

How to crop an image online

  1. 1

    Choose your image

Open a JPG, PNG or WebP image. The editor displays it locally without sending the file to a server.

  2. 2

    Select and refine the crop

Drag to draw a crop, move the selection, resize its corners or choose a fixed aspect ratio. Exact pixel fields are available when a platform has strict requirements.

  3. 3

    Choose the output and download

Keep the crop dimensions or set a new output size. Select JPG, PNG or WebP, adjust quality and download the finished image.

One editor, practical controls

Crop, rotate, flip and resize in one place

A useful image cropper should do more than cut away an edge. Rantey lets you correct orientation, mirror an image, lock the crop to a standard ratio and create a specific output size without moving through several tools. The visible crop grid helps with composition, while numeric coordinates make repeatable work possible.

Free or fixed-ratio croppingDraw any shape ratio or select square, landscape, portrait and story presets.
Exact pixel controlEnter the crop position, width and height when an upload form requires precise dimensions.
Orientation correctionRotate in 90-degree steps and flip horizontally or vertically before export.
Flexible outputDownload JPG, PNG or WebP and control dimensions, quality and the JPG background.

Which image aspect ratio should you choose?

An aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height. Choose the ratio required by the destination instead of guessing, then move the crop to keep the important subject inside the frame.

Aspect ratioTypical shapeUseful for
1:1SquareProfile images, avatars and square product thumbnails
4:3Classic landscapePresentations, galleries and general photography
3:2Photo landscapeCamera photographs, prints and portfolio images
16:9Wide landscapeVideo thumbnails, banners and widescreen displays
4:5PortraitPortrait posts, product photos and mobile feeds
9:16Vertical storyStories, short-form video covers and phone screens

How to crop without losing image quality

Cropping removes pixels outside the selected area, so the crop itself does not invent new detail. Quality can decrease when a small crop is enlarged to a much bigger output size or when a lossy format is exported repeatedly. For best results, begin with the largest available source, avoid unnecessary enlargement and use a high quality setting. PNG is helpful for sharp graphics and transparency; JPG is commonly efficient for photographs; WebP can provide a useful balance for web publishing.

Private browser-based image editing

The cropper uses your browser's image and canvas capabilities. Your chosen image is not uploaded to Rantey, placed in cloud storage or attached to an account. This also removes upload waiting time. Very large source images and very large output dimensions can still use significant device memory, particularly on older phones, so the tool limits source files to 30 MB and output dimensions to 12,000 pixels.

Common questions

Image cropper FAQ

How do I crop an image online?+

Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image, drag across the preview to select the area you want, refine the crop with exact pixel controls, then choose Crop and download.

Can I crop an image to a specific aspect ratio?+

Yes. Choose free crop, square 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, portrait 4:5 or story 9:16. You can also enter exact crop coordinates and dimensions.

Can I rotate or flip the photo before cropping?+

Yes. Rotate the image left or right in 90-degree steps, or flip it horizontally and vertically. The crop selection updates to match the transformed image.

Can I change the output image size?+

Yes. Leave output width and height empty to keep the crop dimensions, enter one dimension to preserve the crop ratio, or enter both for an exact output size.

Which image formats can I download?+

You can keep the practical source format or export the cropped image as JPG, PNG or WebP. JPG includes a selectable background color for transparent pixels.

Are my images uploaded to Rantey?+

No. The image is opened, edited and encoded locally by your browser. Rantey does not receive or store the image.

Does the image cropper work on phones?+

Yes. The crop canvas supports touch input and the controls adapt to mobile screens. For very large images, closing other browser tabs can reduce memory pressure.
