More than a basic word and character counter
A single total rarely answers a writing question. Essays have word requirements, social posts have character limits, speeches have timing constraints and web copy needs clear sentence structure. This workspace keeps the measurements and practical editing actions together so you do not need to paste the same draft into several unrelated tools.
Word count, character count and publishing limits
| Measurement | What it includes | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Words | Unicode words and numeric values | Essays, reports, articles and assignments |
| Characters | Letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation | Social posts, titles, descriptions and form limits |
| Without spaces | All characters except whitespace | Technical limits and compact text comparison |
| Sentences | Sentence-like text segments | Structure and average sentence length |
| Paragraphs | Blocks separated by blank lines | Long-form organization and scanning |
How keyword density should be used
Keyword density describes how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total word count. It can reveal accidental repetition or confirm that a subject is actually discussed, but there is no universal percentage that guarantees search rankings. Write naturally, cover the subject completely and use the target phrase only where it improves clarity. The target checker therefore reports frequency and density without labeling an arbitrary percentage as “perfect.”
Understanding the readability estimate
The English reading-ease estimate uses sentence length and estimated syllables. A higher score generally suggests easier text, while the grade estimate approximates the education level required. Names, abbreviations, technical vocabulary, lists and non-English text can change the result, so treat readability as one editing signal rather than an objective judgment of quality.
Private browser-based text analysis
Counting, transformations, keyword analysis and readability calculations happen in browser JavaScript. The text is not submitted to Rantey. Optional draft saving uses local browser storage only after you enable it, and turning it off removes the saved draft. For especially sensitive material, review your device, browser extensions and clipboard policies before using any web-based editor.
Common questions
Word counter FAQ
How do I count words and characters online?+
Paste or type text into the editor. Word, character, sentence, paragraph, line and timing statistics update immediately without a submit button.
Does the character count include spaces?+
The main Characters value includes spaces and punctuation. The Characters without spaces value removes all whitespace so you can compare both totals.
How is reading time calculated?+
The reading estimate uses 225 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Actual speed varies by reader, subject and delivery style.
What is keyword density?+
Keyword density is the number of occurrences relative to total words. The tool lists frequent meaningful words and can measure a target word or phrase, but density should not be treated as a ranking target.
What does the readability score mean?+
The tool provides an approximate English Flesch Reading Ease and grade-level estimate based on sentence length and estimated syllables. It is a writing aid, not a quality verdict.
Is my text uploaded or stored?+
No. Analysis runs in your browser. Draft saving is off by default; if you enable it, the text is stored only in local browser storage on that device.
Can I upload and download a text file?+
Yes. Open a UTF-8 text file up to 2 MB, edit and analyze it, then download the current text as a .txt file.
Is the word counter free on mobile?+
Yes. It works without registration on modern desktop and mobile browsers, with controls designed for touch screens.
